Frequently asked questions for clients of Colorado VoIP Communications.

Porting phone numbers

Porting a phone number is only available in some areas of the United States and Canada. It is not available within any area outside the USA or Canada.

Below are the traditional steps to port a typical local area number:

  1.  We will need to verify that your phone number(s) can be ported to our system(s).
  2. We will need documents to verify your ownership of the phone number.
  3. Our underlying carriers will require proof of ownership and signing to allow permission for the port.
  4. Once verification, ownership, and signing is approved we can begin the port process.
  5. Within 10-30 days the port process should be complete.

E911 Services:

Porting a phone number is only available in some areas of the United States and Canada. It is not available within any area outside the USA or Canada. Below are the traditional steps to port a typical local area number:

·  Once you have service established, 911 service is typically activated and available in less than hour.

·  Should you test your E911? You do not need to test 911, and we do not recommend dialing 911 unless in an actual emergency.

·  VoIP service relies on the internet and power. If either are unavailable 911 will not function. In this unlikely event, use a cell phone or other means to call 911. A good plan is to always have more than one means to contact 911.

In a real emergency call 911.

What does DID mean?

Definition:
Direct Inward Dialing (DID) is a service of a phone company (or local exchange carrier) that provides a telephone number (or block of numbers) for calling into a company’s private branch exchange (PBX) system. Using DID, a company can offer its customers a phone number to reach the company.

Simultaneous Calls:

At Colorado VoIP Communications we get this question quite often. If more examples are needed, please ask us.

The phone system is licensed based on the number of Simultaneous Calls (internal & external) that your company makes. The more calls made the more Simultaneous Calls are being used. Here are a few examples:

·  A call from one internal phone to another internal phone = 1 Simultaneous Call

·  A single call from internal phone to external phone = 1 Simultaneous Call

·  A single call to the voice mail system = 1 Simultaneous Call

·  A single call on hold = 1 Simultaneous Call

·  A single call forwarded from the system to a cell phone = 2 Simultaneous Calls

·  A single call to a conference = 1 Simultaneous Call

·  An example in action: If your company received two calls, and someone was checking their voice mail = 3 Simultaneous Calls.

·  Another example in action: You are out of the office and your extension is forwarding your call to your cell phone, three calls were in session, and two extensions where talking to each other = 6 Simultaneous Calls.

What does Q.O.S. mean?

Quality of service (Q.O.S.) is the overall performance of a telephony or computer network, particularly the performance seen by the users of the network. QOS is an important tool for VoIP success. Through the years QOS mechanisms have become more and more sophisticated.

Internet speed and bandwidth play a large roll in VoIP. The largest factor in VoIP success is proper QOS to manage the data flow. Data is used for viewing web pages, listening to music, downloading files or pictures. VoIP also uses a little bit of that data, so we must guarantee a small chuck of the total data is ALWAYS available so calls can be heard consistently and clearly… and QOS is that solution.
